Happy Platinum Jubilee!
Detouring a little from my normal… This weekend is a 4-day bank holiday in England to celebrate her Majesty’s 70th year since becoming the Queen of England! Since I watch the Netflix series The Crown and Victoria on PBS, I think I deserve 4 days off.
I do love how the Brits are calling it Platty Joobs!! (The cheeky ones, anyway.)
Well, back on topic… creativity.
Let’s celebrate the Platty Joobs of the science of Creativity!
In 1952, just as young Elizabeth was learning of her father, the King’s, death, and ascending to the throne, Alec Osborn, a co-founder of BBDO Advertising Agency, began developing Brainstorming – the foundational tool of creativity.
Osborne found that if he enforced the concept of ideating without judgement first, and then judged affirmatively in a separate session, they achieved more and better ideas for their clients.
Thus BRAINSTORMING was born. ( In 1952. 70 years ago.)
- Separate divergent and convergent thinking sessions.
- First you ideate – without judgement, and then you bring in evaluation and selection.
By 1953, Elizabeth was officially crowned in her formal coronation. And Alec had written and published Applied Imagination to bring the term BRAINSTORMING to the world.
You may already know I was a professional brainstormer for over 20 years in ad agencies and marketing firms in NYC. I owe my livelihood to Alec Osborn’s idea – and the books he wrote on creativity that ignited a new science.
Happy Platty Joobs, Creativity.
